This isn’t a power bank, it’s a professional power solution

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • The power bank is very powerful
  • It features three charging pads, along with USB-C, USB-A, and DC ports
  • However, it is heavy and somewhat bulky.

more buying choices

Power banks have become much smarter over the years. While you can still pick up a plastic box with a few batteries inside and a USB port or two on the outside, most are more advanced now. There are fewer power banks and more computerized charging stations, bristling with ports and featuring a myriad of buttons, along with the obligatory LCD or OLED display.

This is quite the beast

At the center stage of the Omni 30C+ is an OLED display that shows battery status, power input and output, and battery temperature. The menu is configurable, so you can change the temperature units, display timeout, and more. It’s small, clear, and bright.

There are also a handful of buttons: an on/off button and up/down buttons used to navigate the menu.

On the rear are the ports. You get two USB-C ports (one is used to charge the batteries), two USB-A ports, and a DC barrel plug that can act as both input and output.

The top consists of three wireless charging pads. There’s a 10W pad for smartphones, a 5W pad for earbuds, and a small 3W pad specifically for the Apple Watch.

Inside the pack are eight rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with a combined capacity of 25,600mAh, enough to recharge a 13-inch laptop a couple of times, a smartphone around four times, or your Apple Watch 45 times.

To preserve battery longevity, the Omni 30C+ features a smart charging system that automatically self-discharges the batteries down to 80% during storage.

A nice feature that I like on power banks I use is passthrough charging — which means you can simultaneously charge the power bank and use it to charge other devices — because this allows me to travel with one AC wall charger and use my power bank to split that power to other devices that need charging. It’s a great way to save space.

Also, since the Omni 30C+ comes with three built-in wireless charging pads, I can charge my trifecta of Apple devices — iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods — without needing to carry any other cables or charging pads.

The unit is packed in a rubberized shell that’s designed to ward off scratches and impacts, and based on my testing so far, it does a good job of protecting the unit. While the unit isn’t rated as water-resistant, I’m happy to take mine outdoors in light rain because it doesn’t seem to cause a problem at all.

ZDNET’s buying advice

Omnicharge is a premium manufacturer, and such products command a premium price tag. At $299, this is definitely a premium-priced product. But does the build quality and performance justify the hefty price tag?

In a word, yes.

Try as I might, it’s hard to fault the Omni 30C+. Yes, I can throw out criticism of it being bulky and heavy, but considering that it packs three wireless charging pads along with eight large batteries into the unit, I’m surprised it isn’t bigger and heavier. I got a few trips planned over the coming months, and I can see the Omni 30C+ coming along with me for the ride.
